Different Tests for Students at Different Levels

Depending on school curricula and other factors, young students acquire their English abilities at different times and in different ways. The TOEFL Primary® programme offers 3 tests to measure a range of skills:

  • TOEFL Primary® Reading and Listening test — Step 1 (paper or digitally delivered)

  • TOEFL Primary® Reading and Listening test — Step 2 (paper or digitally delivered)

  • TOEFL Primary® Speaking test (digitally delivered)

Digital delivery is available on the following platforms: Windows® PC, Mac®, iPad® and Chromebookâ„¢.

Each test provides reliable scores, and scores from all tests are mapped to Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) levels. TOEFL Primary reading scores are also matched to MetaMetrics® Lexile® measures, making it easier to find the books and articles that best match students' English reading levels.

TOEFL Primary Reading and Listening tests assess students' knowledge, skills and abilities to fulfill core communication goals in English. They are offered at 2 levels of proficiency, Step 1 and Step 2, so that you can select an assessment that more closely matches the skills your students have acquired. Questions are presented in a multiple-choice format.
